about

Slang are a trio of simply Bass, Sax, and Percussion, but any ressemblance to what we normally associate with this kind of formation (in Jazz mode anyway) pretty well stops there.
Their playing style reveals only a small slice of the be bop-esque.
The kind of urbane, buoyant attitude on order with Los Locos embraces some funk, modern, and Mediterranean/Arabic influences as well.
Drummer MichelSeba usually forgoes the drum kit in favor of hand drums and other percussives.
François Garny, who is responsible for most of the material, plays an upright electric bass.
Unlike that with traditional jazz, he holds down the bottom end with repeated riffs, rather than the more common "walking" style.
All of this underpinning leaves the sax player free to solo away endlessly.
But that is precisely what Manuel Hermia avoids !
Though a hint of Coltrane lurks in the melody line singing clearly throughout the composition.
Thus Slang’s music reaches out and grabs the listener, holding attention all the while.
Ironically, though only three in number, the members do not try to compensate by overpowering the playing field, to fill in every open spot.
The Combined sonic spectrum here is airy; with plenty of space - asound that I have rarely come across before.
And Yet surprisingly it is a highly accessible form of Jazz, filled with a joyous, infectious character that willcertainly appeal to many.
I am going to keep my ears open for more of these Carbon 7 releases; they are just too good to go unnoticed.
