Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) I didn't notice that Guy has added this album to his Bandcamp catalog... Fortunately, "sweetchickyjam" did, and I had to grab it immediately! Multi-talented Belgian composer and marimba wizard Frank Nuyts is one of the brightest stars in zappaesque avantgarde music. No doubt about it. Like "Methane" from 1998, "Surf, Wind & Desire" is a rollercoaster of freaky art rock pieces, orchestrated with finest woodwind and tuned percussion sections. Favorite track: The Creep From The Deep - (Hardscore).

about

The title of this amazing CD is of course a play of words with the name of funkband "Earth Wind & Fire".
But beware, the music is nothing like this band (although at times the bassplay can be rather funky).
This may be a relief tomany progheads, but - like most albums on Carbon 7 - this is not your average prog-material !
The label puts Belgian sixpîece Hardscore under the"New Music" category and why not.
To quote the info-sheet: "They have no limits to style, and while they are always themselves, they constantly concoct for us a series of surrealist mini-cruises, which we come out with our perceptions altered and wet".
Amen to that.
The quasi-concept "Surf, Wind & Desire", dealing with the aquatic world, divesinto all styles and mixes hem into a highly complex and unique blend.
The obvious comparison for this kind of music of course is Frank Zappa.
Especially "The Creep From The Deep" with its spoken parts sounds like the second coming of Frank !
On the CD are many details to be discovered in each song that repeated listening is necessary to remotely grasp what’s inside the music.
Most structures of the pieces are rather classically influenced by the way, while the music itself doesn’t sound classical at all.
The overall tone is rather set by jazz sounds, thanks to the extensive use of saxophones and marimba (for the record: there’s no guitarist in the band), but spiced up with zillions of other elements like cabaret or musical.
The most outstanding part probably are the fantastic and crystal clear vocals of female lead singer Maï, which is located somewhere near Kate Bush in sound (but different, more jazzy perhaps !).
Let me quote the infosheet once more: "A bridge between neo-classical music and rock, but it’s a swinging rope bridge over a ravine, where you’ve got to hang on to the ropes, so you don’t fall and drown in the River Of Easy Classifications".
Enjoy if you dare !
